Krill oil is an extract derived from the marine species known as Antarctic Krill(Euphausia Superba). It is the rich source of phospholipids, Omega-3 -fatty acids-- Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), also the antioxidant Astaxanthin. Krill oil is considered to be superior to the customary fish oil owing to its stability, less mercury and better bioavailability of the fatty acids.
Unlike fish oil, the omega-3 fatty acids in Krill oil has higher absorption rate and higher bio availability as it is in phospholipid form. Omega-3 fatty acids helps in maintaining healthy cholesterol levels and thus acts as cardio protective. The anti-inflammatory properties of Omega-3 fatty acids helps to reduce inflammation whether in arthritis or in any skin affections. Krill oil is found to be useful in in correcting the pre-menstrual symptoms like mood swings, pains and cramps, bloating etc.
Since Krill oil contains Omega-3 fatty acids in phospholipid form, it can easily cross the blood brain barrier and thus it helps to improve the functions of the brain such as improvement in memory, concentration, reduces brain fag etc. It enhances the brain development of the fetus. Also, omega-3 fatty acids reduces the risk for neuro-degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinsonism etc.
The highly potent antioxidant ‘Astaxanthin’ present in Krill oil helps to reduce the free radicals which in turn reduces the ageing process. This antioxidant property helps in improving your immunity and also correcting auto-immune problems.
