What poor sleep actually looks like

1. Stress and a cortisol rhythm that has shifted

Cortisol is meant to follow a curve. High in the morning to wake you, falling steadily through the day so that by night it is low enough to let you sleep.

Under sustained stress that curve flattens or shifts. The consequence is the very recognisable state of being exhausted but unable to switch off, or waking at 3 AM with your mind immediately busy.

  • Any sleep problem that has persisted for more than a month despite reasonable changes
